What we do
We write about the big, underestimated processes already shaping the future.
This is the Second Horizon.
We link events to the underlying constraints that shape our lives. For us that’s demography (and geography), democracy (and its rivals), and data - the currency of the information age.
The French historian Ferdinand Braudel called these the “conjunctures” of history. They are often overlooked - and yet have deep explanatory power.
Understanding how these deeper processes shape events and the choices we face is the ‘Second Horizon’ - going beyond what we see immediately, to really look beyond.
Our Services
Our services are in three parts.
Our commentaries - [accessible here] - are free, offering bite-size analyses and comment on current issues and events.
For members:
Our regular Second Horizon analyses published here are for subscribers. They’re in-depth, looking at the impact of demography, democracy and data on development and events.
Our podcasts coming soon are mainly a short-form, ten-minute piece capturing the key points of our analyses. Occasionally, we produce a longer interview with someone we see as having really deep insights.
Going deeper:
If you want to go further, and talk to us, or work with us to support you, your Board or your team, then you can contact us here. We offer face-to-face services as well as digital. We cover New Zealand and Australia as well as the UK, Europe and North America.
Membership:
We offer membership by invitation. We welcome inquiries, of course. You can join us on our website here. We offer one core subscription for £25 a month. This gives access to the Second Horizon written series, and our soon to launch Podcast series.
How Perivista Works:
We operate the Perivista website and content ourselves, and we don’t sell or share your information with third parties.
Payments are managed through Stripe. We email you the Second Horizon series as it’s released, and we put it on the website - in an area you have access to via your login password.
That’s how you can get access to the Podcasts too.
Some of the writing we make available on the website for anyone, to show what sort of writing we produce.
We take our cyber security seriously. Our site has been reviewed and strengthened by the team at CyberSentience. They specialise in helping small, exposed high-value individuals and groups (like family offices).
Of course, nothing online is 100 per cent safe.
That said, we’re delighted to put members in contact with CyberSentience if you wish.

Perivista Solutions is a strategic intelligence service for senior leaders and boards. We connect events to the underlying forces that shape them — demography, democracy and data — offering in-depth written analysis and podcast interviews with global thought leaders. Unlike news commentary, our work is designed to illuminate the deeper structural forces that determine how the world will look over the next decade, not just the next news cycle.
-
Perivista's Second Horizon Series is built specifically for leaders who want to look beyond immediate events. Our analyses are in-depth, subscriber-only pieces that examine the forces shaping our world — leading with demography, democracy and data. We also publish free commentaries and podcast interviews with global leaders. You can read an example piece on our website before subscribing.

News analysis tells you what happened and why. Strategic foresight asks what underlying forces are shaping events — and what they mean for your organisation over the next five to twenty years. Perivista focuses on what the French historian Fernand Braudel called the 'conjunctures' of history: the demographic, political and technological tides that are often overlooked but carry deep explanatory power. We don't chase the news. We look beyond it.
-
Most boards are well-equipped to manage operational risk — compliance, legal exposure, market performance. The harder challenge is identifying the structural forces that will determine your organisation's future five to fifteen years out. Perivista's Deep Dive service works directly with boards and leadership teams, offering tailored analysis and face-to-face sessions covering the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and North America. Contact us to discuss what that might look like for your organisation.
-
Perivista's starting point is that demographic retreat, the spread of digital technology, and the resulting strains on democratic legitimacy are the big, under-appreciated forces of our time. Our Second Horizon analyses break down how these forces interact — and what they mean for organisations operating in an era of weakening states, labour market disruption and the reshaping of political power. We use government and official data sources, cross-checked against open-source evidence, and subject all figures to internal review before publication.
-
Almost all organisational planning focuses on making existing systems work — managing compliance, performance and near-term risk. The information environment makes this worse: traditional and social media are filled with noise that makes measurement feel like understanding. The Perivista Premise is that the forces actually shaping the world — changing demography, the data economy, and the turmoil of weakening states — are consistently underweighted in strategic planning. Our work is designed to correct that.
-
Management is about making systems work. Leadership is about determining where those systems should be heading. The distinction depends not on measurement alone, but on insight, discovery and vision — and on giving yourself the time and space to look beyond the immediate horizon. Perivista is designed for the small proportion of people who aspire to that kind of leadership. Our analyses, podcasts and advisory sessions are built to support that shift.
-
The Information Revolution has brought us the Algorithmic Age — where echo chambers and social media fill the space with competing truths. Perivista cuts through that by focusing on a small number of structural forces with high explanatory power: demography, democracy and data. Our written analyses are constructed to be load-bearing — dense but worth the effort. Our podcasts are modelled on a Ministerial briefing format: direct, substantive and time-efficient. Our goal is that every member gets out more than they put in.
-
The Perivista Premise is that almost everything most people consider important about AI — job displacement, white-collar disruption, the pace of automation — is broadly understood and therefore already priced in. The more consequential forces are the interaction between AI, the data economy and changing demography: the combination that will determine labour supply, political stability and commercial opportunity over the next decade. Our analyses focus on these structural interactions, not the headline technology story.
-
Think tanks produce research and policy recommendations, typically for public consumption and with institutional positions to defend. Perivista is different: we are a private membership service with no institutional agenda. Our work is designed for senior leaders and boards — not for publication or policy debate. We combine a subscription intelligence service (the Second Horizon Series) with tailored face-to-face and digital advisory work for organisations that want to go further.
-
Perivista's Membership tier (£25/month) is designed to be accessible for individual leaders as well as teams. The Partnership tier (£75/month) is better suited to leadership teams who want to engage more deeply — including podcast access and the ability to shape future topics. For boards or organisations wanting tailored analysis and direct engagement, our Deep Dive advisory service is available separately. Contact us to discuss the right fit.
-
Publications like The Economist and Foreign Affairs provide excellent broad coverage of events and policy. Perivista does something different: we focus on a small number of structural forces — demography, democracy and data — and examine their interaction in depth. We don't report on events; we look at the forces underneath them. We are also a community, not a publication: members can challenge our analysis, suggest topics and commission tailored work. And unlike a magazine, our work is never derivative of others' commentary.
-
Perivista is for leaders who aspire not just to manage but to lead — people who give themselves the time and space to think beyond the operation of existing systems into the future. If your first response to the news is to ask what it means for the next decade rather than next quarter, this is built for you. Second Horizon is not for everyone — we don't chase the news, we don't offer simple answers, and our work is constructed to be demanding. But for those who want clarity of altitude, it repays the effort.
